Scary News

April 15, 2003

SARS closes hospitals, terrifies air travellers. Just reading about it makes me have to cough. 2,726 cases reported, 161 dead worldwide (so far). Very scary.

WAR reports from the middle of Bagdad make me cry, for the children, for the soldiers, for all who are killed or adversely affected and families who survive the destruction. 23 million Iraqi people terrified. 400,000 Iraqi troops and 300,000 U.S. and British troops adversely affected in some way. 118 American soldiers, 31 British soldiers, and hundreds of Iraqi soldiers and civilians dead (so far). Very scary.

FASD issues are buried or lost or forgotten, not important enough, for news or for funding. It is unknown how many babies die before they are born due to alcohol poisoning, there is no body count. Over 100,000 people die because of alcohol in the U.S. every year. After 30 years of being identified as a birth defect, prenatal alcohol exposure still damages babies at the rate of at least 35,000 a year in the U.S. One out of every five women still drink during pregnancy. Very scary.
