She is constantly lying, stealing, and has very angry outbursts. She was diagnosed with OCD, and Bi-polar. After visiting this site, I think we are all missing the big picture in her. I didn't even know there was such a thing as FAS/E. She has no physical appearances. But, I can relate to the neuro-symptoms. Sounds just like her in every aspect. I really need help!!!!!!

I drank frequently and heavily during the first 5 months of my pregnancy. From day 1 I knew something was wrong. FAS had only just been heard of in the uk at that time - I was vaguely aware of it because I was a student nurse at the time. After 17 years of absolute turmoil and at times absolute hell, I finally had my worst fears confirmed when I visited FAS sites. It's still not widely recognised over here so accessing help and support and UNDERSTANDING has been a nightmare and even now, everyone says, "but you don't know for certain that it was the alcohol that has caused chris's problems." They say it to make me feel better, but I KNOW what I did when I was pregnant and I KNOW that Chris's problems are not to do with my failure to discipline him. All my family say he must leave, for the sanity of the rest of us, but he spent 2 years in foster care when he was 14 because we could no longer cope with him and I let him come back home 15 months ago because at 16, social services had made him go to live independently and he clearly wasn't coping. They never picked up that he had problems even though I kept telling them about my concerns.Things have been really bad again lately, and pressure is on from husband and family to kick Chris out.It seems I'm the only one who really understands his problems -everyone else is so ready to say it's because Chris has never had to learn the consequences of his actions etc etc which simply isn't true - he just doesn't learn, fullstop. He just carries on making the same mistakes, time after time. So where DO I get help? I love my son and I know there's a high chance he'll not be able to live independently. He is a vulnerable adult and despite the ignorance of those who say that I am unable to help Chris, and that I let him stay here through guilt,I believe that by continuing to love him, even in the most awful of times, during the violence, aggression, abuse, I am still helping him more than by turning him out onto the street. There IS nowhere for these children to go and yet what do I do when Chris's presence here is dividing my family, causing huge rifts between my husband and me and depressing my 12 year old daughter? It seems there are no answers. Thankyou for this site and for the opportunity to offload!!!

I am a student in grade 9, and this year for my science class, my friend and I were to do a seminar on 1 of a number of topics. We chose FAS. All i knew about it was that it was caused by drinking alcohol during pregnancy. As i started researching, I came across this site. The stories of so many people that were affected with FASD, saddened me. I believe we should try to be more aware of the consequences of our actions and i hope that someday, FASD will be defeated. Thank you for all the useful information and helping me be more aware of this disorder.

It is wonderful to see so many resources all in one place. :-) I come across so many people who believe that "a little won't hurt". They use the example that the "Europeans" drink, and they don't have an FAS problem, so a little doesn't hurt... or North Americans are just being "scaremongered" into complete abstinence to avoid lawsuits etc...or, there is "no proof" that a "little" is really going to cause a problem. Or, they say "I drank" and MY child is fine, so don't worry. They seem to beleive that only if you have an addiction problem is there a reason for concern!! Please tell them it isn't so!

When I called them years later, they admitted that she kept changing her story about her alcohol use. The neurolgist diagnosed Chris with FAS/E at age 6. Chris has ADHD, OCD, Bi-Polar, Motor Disturbance, Growth Hormone Deficiency and now Scoliosis. We are dealing with all kinds of behavior problems at home, school and his assisted job. I hope to find someone to "chat" with, who has a child about my son's age.

We adopted Michael Paul as an infant with no idea how hard it would be to get him all the help he needed. They told us he would never walk or talk, but last year he mainstreamed in kindergarten. We know the progression from special ed classes to special ed mainstream isn't a sign that he will ever be able to live on his own, but we rejoice that he is the best Michael Paul he can be. The solutions are found in doctors who care and know what they are doing, schools who don't care but will follow the law and the support of friends, family and church to get through it all. Please read this poem about my son. He is one of seven. The others are not FASD. They are all children damaged before or after birth who found refuge in our hearts. Michael Paul He came to us a gift disguised as a broken toy. Skin hung from him that didn't fit this blessed little boy. Don't take him home. He'll never walk or talk or sit. But this was the child God gave to us. He was the perfect fit. Yesterday he strolled across the room to lean against my side. I asked him what he wanted and his eyes lit bright and wide. "God sent me to give you some love." And then he walked away. I've entertained angels unawares and one chose to stay. This child is more than they said he could be, His spirit it stirred by God's grace. Everything he does and all he says to me Constantly turns me to God's face. And so as I kneel on hard wooden floor Elbow resting on the bottom stairs, I thank God for this wonderful child Both a source for and an answer to prayers. Michael E. McLarney

I am a student learning a lot. What is being done by the doctors who have the
best opportunity to intervene.? All the posters and t-shirts in the world won't
do what he might be able to do which is at least confront in some sort of way.
What are they learning about possible intervention at their level and what is
their code of ethics regarding that unborn child? What is his responsibility
legally or does that fall under malpractice? Don't they care? I have a very good
friend with two children with FAS and no one said anything to her. Couldn't they
test urine for it? And then talk to mom? If someone can help me understand this
please e-mail me. I am in recovery, but thankfully did not drink while I was
pregnant. I have three daughters.
Sun Oct 26 23:27:32 2003 from
This is an interesting website. However, I am the parent of a learning disabled, short-statured child and everyone assumes that I drank and did drugs when I was pregnant!!! When I tell the neurologists, pediatricians, teachers, etc. that I didn't they just look at me and say "uh huh". My sister-in-law drank and smoked while she was pregnant and her 3 children are perfectly normal! Her oldest is in the gifted program, she is a beautiful child and has won numerous academic and athletic awards. When her cousin was pregnant she smoked and drank all the time and they joked that "G-------- was going to have the retardedest baby you ever saw". Well, the cousin had a perfectly normal, handsome, tall, smart, athletic child. So, there's a lot of misinformation out there. You can drink and still have a perfectly normal, healthy baby. You can abstain completely and have a disabled child.

Now she struggles very hard to do the simplest things. She gets distracted very easily. She has already been held back in Kindergarten she can not be held back in school again (she is to old to be held back). She is not making it in school and I have tried everything that I can think of to help her. Now that I have found this site, I will be using some information that I have found here. Thank you.

Great site! I've been asked to come back to work for the Texas Office for Prevention of Developmental Disabilities as a consultant to do FASD Presentations/workshops. I needed updating pretty badly. This site helped me find material I can use to update my presentation. Thank you and keep up the good work. jar

Much is being made of "faith based" treatment of alcoholism, but the smell of money attracts those who frequently want funding for "treatment" instead of dissemination of information about what God can do. My thirteen years of research and 22 published titles on the history of early A.A.'s spiritual roots and successes, as well as its documented cures, warrants presentation to your viewers. Each person's story helps every other person who reads it. We learn from each other that we are not crazy, we are not bad parents, and we are not alone in this struggle to help our children find success. Thanks to each one of you for taking the time to share with us.

Excellent site! I am currently working in an adolescent aftercare treatment center and most of the staff are uneducated about FAS/FAE and need to be. I will definately pass on the information. Thanks for the site! I will be back!!!
