Name: Tammy Newhook Website: Referred by: Lycos From: Newfoundland Time: 1998-11-28 18:50:00 Comments: I believe this is a damaging problem, equally as important as drinking and driving. Especially in smaller communities where it is still socially acceptable for a mother to consume alcohol. I believe the education we have been receiving in the previous years has placed some differing views on the current problem however if we are to prevent children with fas/fae we as a society need to come up with options for mothers other than drinking in the community. Maybe start new programs from the already existing organizations/agencies in your community. All we really need are interested and dedicated people to have a short portion of their time helping others. With mothers supporting each other instead of trying to outdo each other while they are pregnant we would witness a hugh difference in the quality of life. |

Name: Dora Dailey Website: My Mother In Laws Family Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: Neah Bay Washington Time: 1998-05-09 05:11:00 Comments: Please help!! I am writing for my Mom Inlaw. She is the parent of children with FAS and admits it. Her younger sons are of age now. They have been in the criminal court system for some years now. She has 13 yrs. sobriety. She has attempted to get help for them but the system is not knowledgeable enough about FAS to offer any assistance or referal. Even her attempts to get them into treatment got only an answer that they did not have a drinking problem for long enough for them to cause him to seek treatment. Her 21 yr. old finally got into treatment in Nov thru Jan. And really liked it. So much that he did not want to leave. I am parenting my husbands two children 12 & 19 both diagnosed FAS. So I have educated my self about FAS. And so know that this young man that wanted to stay in treatment found the stable and consistant enviroment very rewarding. Those boundaries he could find no where else. Well just a little while ago the police were here trying to locate him due to a recent burglery and assault. Let alone that Tuesday of this week he had taken his cousins van with her young children, him drunk, racing in it and then attempting to break in to a truck with the children standing at his side. So, now do you know of any treatment available for a Native American Man with FAS. Is there anything to cause the courts to make appropriate action before this young man hurts someone, himself or ends up in the prison system. Respectfully, Dora Dailey |

She was diagnosed at the University of Washington by Dr. Ann Streissguth's team in 1995 and within the next year we will be going back for another evaluation. Most people believe that FAE is a lessor form of FAS however, I concur with Dr. Streissguth that these are two different disabilities and need to be addressed as such. If you know of any studies that support this view I would appreciate your passing the information along to me and I will credit your efforts on my manuscript and on my web site at the future FAE page I hope to develop. Keep up the informative work and God bless you. Marita A Lawler |

Christopher is now one year old and has overcome many of the symptoms associated with FAS. Just when we think the child has practically overcome some of the symptoms, new ones appear. It is quite challenging but we love the results we see. Christopher gets excellent medical and psychological care but we know we have a lot more to learn about FAS. We are new at this business of the internet but we are finding out that there is a lot of information available on this subject and we both expect to learn a lot so we can take care of our nephew. Yes, Christopher is our nephew and so far is showing great progress. He's very intelligent, is beginning to say a few words, has been walking for three months and is now beginning to show signs of hyperactivity. We love Chris and look forward to learning more ways of using the internet for this purpose. Thanks for this registry page. Suarez and Suarez. |

He had FAE and was prenatally drug expososed. He was a great swimmer, a wonder and kind boy - but he knew he was falling farther and farther behind his peers. He was struggling with typical issues of love and losses and being teased by others. We thought we could and were providing enough support for him through our family. The pressure was more than he could take. My husband and I have set up a trust fund in an effort to help the school division have classrooms that can provide an encompassing education and environment that is best suited for children like my son. I had heard on CBC radio that there was a doctor in Ontario who had done research on this. Do you happen to know his name of how I can get a hold of him. I thank you for any assistance you can provide me about this. My son is/was not the only child in this situation and not one more child should die for the reasons he did. Thanks |

From: Oregon on the Columbia River Time: 1998-01-08 01:31:00 Comments: Teresa and John, Thank you for being on the net when we most needed help. We live in the country and don't have easy access to support or understanding for our daughters Heather 11 and April 9. We got them both knowing that they were diagnosed FAS & FAE. We love them so much and they are doing so well that we lost track of what is really going on for them; the stress they are being placed under. The new scholastics standards this year has put us out of the ball game at school. They can't keep up and their classmates are moving along on schedule. We were frustrated and sad. After visiting your web page, we found resources to read, programs ready-made for the their educators, plans that we can present to the school administration so we can get some modified teaching for them. All I can say is thank you and I am sure we will be staying in touch. |
