I Read About It

By Annie

I read about a country where baby girls
are tossed into a river
Its just because they are girls
This made my soul shiver.

I read about a country where children
of 4 and 5 are sold to factories
Its because that is how their parents will survive
This made my soul ache.

I read about a country where children dodge bombs
to get to the ration lines
Its because they live in a state of war
It made my soul weep

I read about a country where the babies
go blind before they can speak
Its because they miss one vitamin
This made my soul grieve

I read about a country where thousands of children
are born with a horrible disease
Its because their mothers don't know how to not drink
It made my soul churn in disbelief.

I live in a country that has no war,
that has few bombs,
that has vitamins to help us see.
Its because it is a great country
It's a country where pregnant women still drink.
